New energy savings measures to reduce emissions, save $132,360 annually -
Hartland, Wis. (Oct. 13, 2010)— With the help of We Energies and Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide program for energy efficiency and renewable energy, Arrowhead Union High School has completed a number of energy saving improvements and upgrades at its Hartland, Wis., campuses.
The facility improvements made at Arrowhead Union High School are expected to provide approximately $132,360 in savings annually due to reduced energy consumption. Arrowhead Union High School received $94,592 in financial incentives from Focus on Energy to help boost its efforts toward becoming more energy efficient. “By making energy management a priority, Arrowhead will responsibly reduce its energy use, better manage its energy costs, and see the long-term benefits of these actions for years to come,” said Kevin Lipscomb, Director of Buildings & Grounds at Arrowhead Union High School.

Throughout several facilities service provider Uihlein Electric upgraded Metal Halide and T12 fluorescent light fixtures to high efficiency T8 fixtures with occupancy and day lighting sensors. In some areas, the new fixtures produced a higher lumen output and required fewer replacement fixtures and lamps per fixture, further reducing the overall electrical demand. Areas with newly upgraded high-efficiency lighting applications include school classrooms, corridors, gymnasiums, cafeterias, ice center, and the transportation/maintenance facility.
Service provider Environmental Systems Inc. assisted the district with the installation of a new direct digital controls system and the commissioning of existing building equipment in an effort to operate the North and South Campus facilities more efficiently. The building commissioning process ensures that the equipment is scheduled to operate at optimal settings for greatest energy efficiency without compromising occupants’ year-round comfort. Commissioning of the two campuses allowed for improved scheduling of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning equipment to run based on occupancy levels and varying outdoor and indoor conditions, which increases cost savings and occupant comfort in the school.

Because of these energy efficiency investments Arrowhead Union High School will save more than 636,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity, reduce peak electrical demand by 438 kW, and save 29,000 Therms of natural gas annually—which is enough energy to power 94 Wisconsin homes for a year. The upgrades not only save energy and money, but also benefit the environment. The annual environmental benefits are equivalent to offsetting the burning of 1,756 barrels of oil – eliminating more than 1,421,643 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere.

School facilities have many opportunities to save money through energy efficiency and renewable energy. Focus can help identify and evaluate energy saving opportunities, report findings with specific recommendations, develop energy management plans, find vendors and arrange technical training opportunities about energy conservation – ultimately helping companies improve their bottom line.
