Low-Cost Ways to Save Energy this Winter
- Fall back. Daylight savings time starts November 7. Check and change the current time on all lighting and heating control systems and thermostats.
- Check heating set points. With either intelligent building automation systems or single-zone thermostats, set points may have been adjusted or overwritten.
- Verify that humidification systems are operating properly. Proper humidity control is an essential element in keeping employees comfortable.
- Check economizer operation. As winter approaches, cooling can be locked out in most buildings.
- Adjust boiler reset temperature schedule. Automatic adjustment for outdoor temperature changes optimizes energy use.
- Clean HVAC filters. Summer and fall seasons can load HVAC filters with dust and pollen, which increases air resistance, makes fans work harder and reduces motor life. Consider upgrading to higher efficiency filters to save additional energy.
- Conduct an energy audit. In areas like the Midwest where the heating season is much longer than the cooling season, this is the best time to functionally test your HVAC and control systems and determine where energy dollars are being wasted.
- Tap into energy program funding and incentives. Your facility may qualify for building tune-up or re-commissioning incentives that will produce sustainable energy savings.
